LOCATION:
On a hill, 12 kms from Thane Railway Station. Part of "Sanjay Gandhi National Park", which is a protected forest.
2200 families live here in different clusters.
Everybody works as a wage labourer. Some families have small land holding, on which they grow rice - which they consume. Yet they ywork as wage labourers to supplement income. An average family earns Rs.50 to Rs.100 from a days work. Most houses are not electrified. There is no water supply, though the municipalty have installed several hand pumps. They are ineffective during summers. The municipality Primary School closed down a long time ago due to non-attendance. It is not possible for children to climb down the hills to attend city schools.
PROPOSED ACTION BY HELP
a) Running a school with an emphasis on the girl child upto primary level (the only motivation which will work initially, so that parents send their children, is the distribution of biscuits etc.)
b) Visit by a doctor for medical check-up and distribution of free medicines to the extent possible. Dr, Snehal Surve, BMS and Dr. Bbandekar Deepali, Homeopath.
c) Provide improved "Chulha" where the family's contribution should be 50% of the cost.
d) Visits by "Alchoholic Anonymous". They have agreed for free visits, giving counselling, lectures, etc.
e) Explain family planning, hygiene and First Aid through videos.
f) Finding solution to the water problem by boring.
g) Income generation program like making wooden toys and ceramics.
h) BUDGET - Rs. 5500/- per month.
